Mayor Of Crossville

James Mayberry

Mayor

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the City of Crossville!  We are located atop the beautiful Cumberland Plateau on Interstate 40, only a short drive to three metropolitan cities.  Our 2,000 foot elevation offers a mild, four season climate year round.  Our rural area offers an abundance of outdoor possibilities, with mountainous wildlife reserves, lakes, streams, and the Cumberland Mountain State Park.

We are known as the Golf Capital of Tennessee.  With nine pristine courses in our community, Crossville has become a golfers' paradise of national recognition; however, the opportunities and activities are endless.  Our Cumberland County Playhouse serves more than 165,000 visitors annually and the historic Palace Theatre on Main Street is always active.  We are also the location of the United States Chess Federation headquarters, a restored railroad Depot & Caboose Visitor's Center, and part of the World's Largest Yard Sale on Highway 127 North.

Our youth opportunities abound with nine elementary schools and two high schools and we join the State of Tennessee promoting two years free post-secondary education at our Tennessee College of Applied Technology,

Please take time to navigate our website to find out more about us. The calendar of events is a good start to see what events are upcoming that you might be interested in.  We have many civic groups that are in need of volunteers.  We can put you in touch with any that you are either interested in or would like to know more about.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 931-484-5113.

"Crossville, Tennessee, it's just better here."

Business Information

BUSINESS TAX
A business license is required for all businesses located in the City limits of Crossville, with the exception of those businesses specifically exempted through State law. Any business inside the city limits is required to purchase both city and county business licenses. The initial license is $15 and is obtained through the City Clerk's office. A yearly return must be filed with the Tennessee Department of Revenue and a tax will be assessed based on the gross receipts of the business. A final return must be filed when a business is closed.

TRANSIENT VENDORS/PEDDLERS
Vendors that have a current business license with another city in Tennessee are not required to have a business license with the City of Crossville when temporarily on business in Crossville. All others are required to have both a Peddler's Permit and a Transient Vendors License that is good for a 14 day period. The Peddler's Permit is $5.00 and requires a police check which may take a few days. The Transient Vendor license is $57 and is good for 14 days. Please visit Applications & Permits for the application.

These permits are not required for the annual Highway 127 Yard Sale held in August; however, the vendor cannot set up sooner than the Monday prior to the official start of the sale.

Official Sale Dates         Earliest Set-Up Date
  August 2-5, 2018           July 30, 2018
  August 1-4, 2019           July 29, 2019

OUTDOOR SALES, GARAGE SALES, YARD SALES
Permits are required for all outdoor sales, garage sales, and yard sales. Sales are limited to 5 per year per property address. They cannot be held for longer than three (3) consecutive days during a week. There is no charge for the permit. Please visit Applications & Permits for the application. For further information, the complete ordinance is available here.

SOLICITATION PERMIT
A Solicitation Permit is required for organizations soliciting funds through donations from the public. Roadblocks are not permitted within the City of Crossville. Solicitation permits are granted through the City Council at their regular meeting held on the second Tuesday of each month. To be on the agenda for approval, applications must be received by the City Clerk no later than the Wednesday prior to the meeting. Please visit Applications & Permits for the application.

BEER PERMITS
Beer permits may be approved for on-premises sales, off-premises (package) sales, or both on- and off-premise sales. The application fee is $250 with a yearly fee of $100, and a $27 fee to cover the cost of advertising. City Council grants all beer permits at their regular Council meeting held on the second Tuesday of each month. The application must be received by the City Clerk early enough to advertise the public notice at least 10 days prior to the meeting. Upon receipt of the application and fee, the City Clerk will provide an advertisement for the applicant to place in the newspaper. Please visit Applications & Permits for the application.

LIQUOR LICENSES
Liquor and wine sales are governed by the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission.  They are the first stop in obtaining a liquor license. They can be reached at (615) 741-1602. Once a liquor license has been issued by the ABC, businesses must obtain a license from the City Clerk. The permit cost is an annual fee paid to the State and City based on the number of seats and type of facility. Please visit Applications & Permits for the application.

TAXICABS
Taxicab franchises and drivers are required to be licensed by the City with annual renewals. Drivers are required to meet licensing requirements, pass a physical exam, and a review of their driving record from the Tennessee Department of Safety. There is no cost for the permit. Please visit Applications & Permits for the applications.

FIREWORKS
Permits are required to sell, distribute, store, or manufacture fireworks in the City of Crossville. Permits are also required for public displays. The cost is $1,000 per year. For seasonal stands, they must be filed no later than two weeks prior to proposed opening of stand with a permit issued by the state fire marshal attached. Due to the many site requirements, it is recommended that prospective vendors refer to the Crossville Municipal Code for regulations. In addition to the fireworks permit, a business license or transient vendor license is also required. Please visit Applications & Permits for the application.
